About Rolfing
What is it?
Rolfing can also be defined as the change of structural patterns using manual techniques to increase the efficiency of movement and overall well being. Changing the anatomical placement increases the body’s physiological capabilities. When the body’s physiology is at equilibrium, a person’s mental and emotional capacity will be optimized in their surroundings.
Who is it for?
People all over the world have turned to Rolfing for a variety of different reasons. Well over one million people have experienced Rolfing. Many people have physical symptoms and diagnoses that they want to treat, some want to improve athletic performance, and others want to use Rolfing for preventative measures. The reasons for Rolfing, and the possibilities for the use of Rolfing are endless.
What’s the difference between Rolfing and other modalities such as massage and Chiropractic?
Massage, Chiropractic, and Rolfing all have different goals.
For massage, often the goal is to bring stress relief, relaxation, and to remove toxins from an individual’s muscles and tissues. For many, massage will bring temporary relief before symptoms reappear.
Chiropractic treatments are primarily focused on adjusting and aligning bones and joints. Many of these adjustments are done using high velocity techniques. Very often after bones are realigned, they end up finding their way back into misalignment over time as the bones and joints are embedded in the connective tissue called fascia.
Rolfing addresses the individual’s underlying causes of pain and tension. Sessions are not designed to create instant relaxation, but to instead create space and sustainable changes in the body. To do this, Rolfing specifically addresses fascia in a slow and methodical manner. Once the connective tissue patterns are in more optimal alignment, the bones and joints will fall back into natural alignment thus allowing more permanent changes. Many people have reported that utilizing a chiropractor while receiving Rolfing sessions can be rather effective.
